The Little Sisters of the Poor believe in the power of community for the well-being of their Resident family. Activities at Jeanne Jugan Residence – Mass, sing-alongs, chair yoga, holiday and feast day parties, and more delight their Resident family and encourage activity and community. Through Music with Mary and Meg, and with the support of Mother Patricia Mary and Kate, Director of Activities, we have the opportunity to bring the benefits of exercise and music together in a way that fills our hearts with joy—and the hearts of the elderly at Jeanne Jugan Residence. The program was born from our desire to give back to the Home where we witness exceptional and loving care of our parents.
As retired teachers with more than 30 years of classroom experience, we have always recognized the value of incorporating movement and exercise into daily routines. Music with Mary and Meg is a simple, yet impactful, program where we lead Residents in joyful music sessions that not only stimulate the mind but also encourage gentle physical movement. We know firsthand that exercise at any age promotes health, increases mobility, and boosts mood. Combining exercise with music amplifies those benefits.
Each session is filled with laughter, smiles, and fun as Residents participate in easy, interactive movements that keep them engaged. Whether tapping their feet to the rhythm, stretching to a lively tune, or clapping along to a favorite song, the enthusiasm shown by the residents is truly a sight to behold. For us, this connection is what makes the program so special—it’s not just about exercise or music, it’s about bringing everyone together, fostering a sense of community, and sharing meaningful moments.
There is something magical about watching the Residents light up when familiar melodies play, or seeing them come alive with energy as they join in on the fun. It is a wonderful reminder of how music can transcend time and bring back memories, while also offering physical benefits that help improve strength, balance, and coordination.
For us, the joy is mutual. Music with Mary and Meg has become a beloved part of the weekly routine at the Home, and it’s not just the Residents who benefit. We, too, feel the reward of contributing to an experience that brings so much happiness and vitality to those who need it most. There is no greater satisfaction than knowing we are helping to improve the well-being of those we care about, while creating lasting memories along the way.
