A few years ago, the Little Sisters of the Poor visited our parish to solicit support for the Jeanne Jugan Residence. The sincerity of their
presentation demonstrated the love and compassion they give to our elderly brothers and sisters in need.
As the basket made its way through the pews, it brought back memories of our family physician, Dr. Hennessey, who donated his time caring for the Residents there, as well as of our brother, who, on occasion, was pulled from school to be an altar server at Mass in their chapel.
The Little Sisters’ visit prompted another memory of when I was a young girl and a member of the Legion of Mary in St. Mary’s Parish in Pawtucket. As seventh graders, my friend and I would visit the Home, where one of our tasks was to replace all of the candles in the chapel.
During our visits, we could not help but feel the peaceful presence of the Sisters and the serenity of the surroundings.
The Little Sister who addressed the members of our parish spoke of their trust in God’s Providence to supply for all of their needs. We figured that we were providentially at Mass that day to be reminded of the good works of the Little Sisters of the Poor and felt inspired to help them then, and still today.
As we mature into our golden years, we often reflect on our blessings of a loving family, children and grandchildren. We would like to share this blessing with our elderly brothers and sisters by focusing part of our charitable trust to the endeavors of the Little
Sisters of the Poor in their selfless giving of respect, care, and love to the elderly poor.
